At WWDC 2026, Apple introduced a major developer toolkit upgrade that blends new intelligence frameworks, agentic coding in Xcode 27, stronger Swift and SwiftUI updates, and expanded gaming resources to help developers build smarter apps faster across Apple platforms.
TL;DR
- Apple introduced new intelligence frameworks that let developers add AI features using Apple Foundation Models, third-party models such as Claude and Gemini, and custom on-device models through Core AI.
- Xcode 27 brings agentic coding deeper into Apple’s developer workflow, with support for agents from Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI, plus tools for testing, previews, Playgrounds, and simulator interaction.
- The release also updates Liquid Glass, SwiftUI, Swift 6.4, Xcode Cloud, and game development tools, while developer betas for Apple’s latest platforms and Xcode 27 are now available.
Apple Expands AI App Development With New Intelligence Frameworks
Apple is pushing deeper into AI-powered app development with new intelligence capabilities designed to make apps more adaptive, discoverable, and easier to build.
The company said the updates span Apple Intelligence, Siri AI, App Intents, Foundation Models, and a new Core AI framework.
The updated App Intents framework lets developers connect their apps to Siri AI capabilities such as personal context understanding, app actions, and onscreen awareness. In practice, this means apps can become more useful across the system without forcing users to manually jump between features.
“Developers are at the heart of the Apple ecosystem, and our goal is to provide them with the best possible tools and technologies to build the future,” said Susan Prescott, Apple’s VP of Worldwide Developer Relations. “With new intelligence frameworks and agentic coding in Xcode 27, developers have the tools they need to focus on what they do best: bringing their incredible ideas to life.”
Apple Foundation Models Get Gemini Support And Free Private Cloud Access
The Foundation Models framework now acts as a single native Swift API that supports more powerful on-device models with image input, server models, and custom skills.
Apple said developers can use the API to tap into the next generation of Apple Foundation Models, which were built in collaboration with Google and its Gemini models.
Apple is also opening access for smaller developers. Developers enrolled in the App Store Small Business Program with fewer than 2 million total first-time App Store downloads can use next-generation Apple Foundation Models running on Private Cloud Compute at no cloud API cost.
For developers who prefer other models, Apple is adding flexibility too. The framework can support models such as Claude and Gemini, along with models from any provider that implements Apple’s new language model protocol. Dynamic Profiles will also let developers change how models interact with their apps in real time.
Core AI, Apple’s new framework for custom models, is built to run models on device. It is optimized for Apple silicon’s unified memory and Neural Engine, allowing developers to deploy full-scale large language models locally.
Xcode 27 Brings Agentic Coding From Anthropic, Google, And OpenAI Into The Workflow
Xcode 27 is Apple’s biggest move yet into agentic coding. The release brings models and agents from Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI directly into the development workflow, giving developers a more interactive way to plan, test, and refine code.
Coding agent conversations now support interactive planning, multiturn Q and A, and a canvas that can render Markdown while showing code changes and previews side by side. Xcode 27 also gives agents tools to validate their own work, including writing and running tests, trying ideas in Playgrounds, checking previews, and interacting with the simulator through the new Device Hub.
The Device Hub gives developers one workspace to manage physical devices, dynamically resize simulators, and test apps more interactively. Xcode plug-ins will also let developers add custom skills, connect tools through the Model Context Protocol, and use any agent compatible with the Agent Client Protocol.
GitHub and Figma are the first to support seamless installation between their tools and Xcode. Apple also said Xcode 27 is now Apple silicon only, 30% smaller, faster, easier to set up, and more customizable.
Liquid Glass, SwiftUI, And Swift 6.4 Aim To Make Apps Faster And Cleaner
Apple’s refreshed Liquid Glass design brings improvements in legibility, customizability, and consistency across platforms. A new transparency slider in Settings lets users personalize the visual experience, while the design adapts to different accessibility settings.
SwiftUI also gets a performance boost. Apple said apps can become more responsive without developers changing code, thanks to more efficient state initialization and faster layout rendering.
New reorderable containers reduce the need for custom code, while Spatial Preview lets 3D models from Mac apps be viewed spatially when streamed to Apple Vision Pro.
Swift 6.4 focuses on everyday developer quality-of-life improvements, including targeted warning suppression, simplified availability attributes such as anyAppleOS, and improved compiler diagnostics.
